Confessions Tonight: Extended Happy Hour, and Some Advice on “Making It” in the Music Industry

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of phone calls on my cell phone from numbers I don’t recognize. One is a perv guy that keeps calling me and hanging up, but the rest of from folks that got my phone number from a music industry guide that keeps listing my number (even though I stopped being an agent eight months ago). Some of these people are looking for me to represent them (as I used to be a booking agent and artist manager). Others have been looking for some advice on “making it” in the industry.

First I ask them to “define” what “making it” means to them. Most of them just want to make a ton of money, and be wrapped up in fame and glory. I tell them they are in the wrong industry if that’s how they determine success. Plus they already made their first crucial mistake, they “cold called”  me.

Most every agent in the world (reputable agent) doesn’t except cold calls or unsolicited material. My first advice is to them is write good music, rehearse as much as possible, and get a local following, aka your own fan-base.

I have almost a books worth of advice on this industry…hmmm wait, should I try and publish that? or give it away? Altruistic or Materialistic? I’ll figure that out tonight when you come and join me and Leah for a drink at Confessions. Happy Hour will be extended until 10pm, and from 11-midnight we will be doing 2 for 1 margarita’s and at midnight free mandatory shots.
